School Bus Test Driving Event

PRESS RELEASE: SCHOOL BUS TEST DRIVING EVENT

LONG VALLEY— School districts nationwide are facing a school bus driver shortage, with Long Valley being no exception.  Driving a school bus is a great part time job for retirees, college students over the age of 21 and parents of students.  If you enjoy working with kids and want holidays/weekends off, then this is your chance to see what being a school bus driver is all about!

The Washington Township Schools (Morris County) Transportation Department is holding a School Bus Test Driving Event on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 9 am – 12 pm at the Long Valley Middle School, 51 West Mill Rd, Long Valley, NJ.

Trained transportation staff will allow prospective applicants, with valid driver's licenses, to drive a school bus around the school campus following an informative classroom presentation.  In the classroom, members of the Washington Township Schools transportation team will outline the training and certification process, including taking the CDL written exam and road test.  Inside the bus, participants will be shown all of the buttons, the mirrors and the air brake system.  When the transportation team is comfortable that the prospective applicants are ready, then they will allow the prospective applicant to actually drive the bus around the parking lot.

District Transportation Supervisor, Don Paul Todd states “What I want to do is get information into their hands and then let them get behind the wheel of the bus so that they can see it is not really as difficult to drive the bus as they expected.”

The application process will be available after the demonstration and interviews will be held during the week of August 5-9, 2024.  Successful candidates who are hired by the district as substitute bus drivers will start at $28 per hour upon completion of the training program.  Benefits are available as full time positions are vacated and filled from the substitute pool.

To reserve your driver’s seat, contact the Transportation Department at (908) 876-5311 extension 1, no later than Monday, July 22, 2024.
